An excellent and varied day with some good weather for most of it.
Seymour Johnson tanker was the first action of the day and a first for me so it was worth the trip already.
On my numerous trips up to RAF Mildenhall I had seen several C-5's parked on the terminal ramp but never witnessed a departure or an arrival of the type. Today we were lucky to witness a rather nice departure of AFRC C-5A 69-0016 of the 68th AS based at lakeland. But typically the sun went behind a cloud as it lumbered skywards.
With 13sqn RAF Tornado's working up for deployment they could be heard all day working over at the STANTA range and we were treated to several overshoots, although by the time they got to runway 11 threshold they where all a little high but nice to see some fast jets working the ILS for a change.
With the 48th Fighter Wing Eagles currently being deployed to Mildenhall whilst work is carried out at Lakenheath anticipation of some action is always on the cards, however until today they had all remained firmly on the ground. Thankfully today we were treated to action from both the E's and a couple of C's.
The C's were infect a couple of "Mig Killers" details of which are:
22Mar91 ZEREX21 53TFS/36TFW F-15C 84-010 Su-22 AIM-9
22Mar91 ZEREX22 53TFS/36TFW F-15C 84-015 PC-9 Ground
And contrary to press reports we were treated to some overshoots when they returned from there missions.
And final action of the day was a resident Herky bashing the circuit in some rather nice late afternoon light.
